Welcome to Art Club!

Week one was a great start to this semester's club! Art Club is co-led by me, ellafae, and my teaching artist friend, Virginia Dunn. We begin each session together as a group, then divide into two sections within the same room to focus on age-appropriate, developmentally tailored projects. I work with both groups to help guide and support their work.

At our first meeting, everyone settled in quickly and got to work. These young artists started by personalizing their sketchbooks by designing their own covers. They learned about a project we will be working on, altered books, and started brainstorming. They learned about different ways artists change and create art to make altered books, and they sketched ideas for their own.

In Art Club, kids are given extra time to finish their projects, which is important because it allows them to focus on enjoyment and personal satisfaction rather than feeling rushed. If a student is really absorbed and wants to keep working on their piece, they are always encouraged to do so. I don’t want to stop their creative flow. This freedom and patience are such an important part of nurturing their creativity. It’s wonderful to watch their ideas take shape and grow when they have the time and space to explore them fully!
